The U.S. Embassy in Lomé informs U.S. citizens in Togo that the “Collectif Sauvons le Togo,” a political opposition group, has organized a three-day demonstration, scheduled to take place from Thursday, January 10, through Saturday, January 12, in Lomé and other cities such as Aneho, Kpalimé, Sokodé, Kara, and Dapaong.  Reports indicate that the Dekon and Bè neighborhoods in Lomé will be affected.  Previous demonstrations of a similar nature have ended with the vandalism of cars and private property, clashes with security forces, road blocks and burning tires.

The Embassy strongly recommends that U.S. citizens stay clear of these areas and avoid walking or driving on streets where you see large crowds or stopped traffic.  Please be aware that demonstrations may occur without warning anywhere in the city.  We also wish to remind U.S. citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence.  U.S. citizens are urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Togo enroll in the Department of State's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at https://step.state.gov/step.  STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency.  If you don't have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

Regularly monitor the State Department's website at http://travel.state.gov, where you can find current Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and the Worldwide Caution.  Read the Country Specific Information for Togo at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_4965.html.  For additional information, refer to "A Safe Trip Abroad" on the State Department's website.
