Ancien Premier ministre de la transition après la Conférence nationale de 1992, Joseph Koffigoh a été l’un des acteurs de l’opposition dans les années 91 et 92 avant de rejoindre sans crier gare le camp de ceux qu’il combattait. 
  

Il y était resté jusqu’au lendemain des élections très contestées du 27 octobre 2002 et la formation de 2e gouvernement SAMA dans lequel l’homme de Kpélé-Akata a été remercié et mis au garage. Il était rentré ainsi dans le fameux clan des anciens ministres et « anciens barons » du régime. 


Mais depuis, il se fait rare, et a décidé de se reconvertir à la poésie. Face à la situation sociopolitique qui prévaut actuellement, l’homme a décidé d’agir à travers un canal qu’il maîtrise assez bien, la poésie. Il crie son désespoir et appel les Togolais à combattre le régime les mains nues. Un appel diversement apprécié dans l’opinion publique.

Les leçons de Sokodé

On a cru épurés les démons du passé ;
Ils reviennent toujours à l’instar des moustiques,
Diffuser leur venin avec leur acoustique 
Qui crèvent les tympans au risque d’en casser.

Des gens meurent pour ça ! Juste pour des réformes
Qui viendront sûrement après l’enterrement ;
Combien de deuil faut-il ? Combien d’adolescents
Doivent donner leur vie aux gens en uniforme ?

Combien de gendarmes ? Combien de policiers
Doivent donner leur sang pour qu’enfin on respire
Cet air du renouveau auquel chacun aspire,
Pour ne plus conspirer contre l’autorité ?

Faut-il pour épurer l’air encor vicié,
De nouveau convoquer les gens charismatiques,
Les pasteurs, les imams, les prêtres catholiques,
Remettre des bougies sur d’autres chandeliers ?

Que disent les vaudou, avec tous ces béliers
Qu’on a sacrifiés pour avoir la quiétude ?
Que font donc ces totems dont on a l’habitude
D’invoquer les surnoms et les noms pour prier ?

Les vieux, les dieux, même le Miséricordieux,
Demeurent silencieux à toutes les prières ;
Ils accueillent pourtant, après les cimetières,
Les âmes des martyrs de nos combats foireux.

Dieu même est fatigué de ces incongruités
Qu’on lui sert chaque jour, quand sur les plateformes,
Chacun à tour de rôle, on cite les réformes,
Sans même en connaître vraiment tous les secrets.

Réservons nos balles pour de meilleurs combats ;
Retenons nos cailloux pour que les uniformes
Qui maintiennent l’ordre comprennent les réformes,
Depuis le Lac Togo jusqu’à Namoudjoga.

Combattons les mains nues sans lancer des cailloux,
En sachant que bientôt l’avenir nous accueille
Avec des lauriers d’or qui brilleront, pareils
Aux standards des nations qui ne sont pas voyous.

De grâce, allons vite ! Le temps nous est compté ;
Le passé qui revient nous jette à la figure
Sa braise non éteinte et laisse des blessures ;
C’est bien ce que disent les morts de Sokodé.

The Government of Ghana must be tactful in any mediation moves it embarks on, as efforts by opposition parties to end the reign of the Eyadema dynasty in Togo heightens, Dr Kwesi Aning, Director of the Faculty of Academic Affairs & Research, Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), has said.

He was of the view that there are several dynamics at play and leaders in Ghana who try any mediatory moves must be wary not to engage in any actions that will rather have dire consequences.

He said there are actions being taken to ensure that peace is restored in Togo “but because of the Supreme sensitivities of our historical relationships with Togo, Ghana must tread cautiously”.

Violence erupted in certain parts of Togo after a series of protests to restore the 1992 Constitution which prescribes the tenure of office of a sitting president for Togo.

The protestors say they are fed up with the governance of the country by the Gnassingbe family in almost 50 years of power, coupled with corruption, oppression, unaccountability, misuse of public funds and abuse of power to the detriment of citizens.


Seven people are reported dead, as fresh waves of protests are expected in the coming weeks.

The current Togolese President, Faure Gnassingbe, is also the current ECOWAS President.

Dr Aning, who was contributing on a discussion to the development on Class FM’s World Affairs programme on Friday, August 25 told the host, Etse Sikanku, that: “Ghana is intervening at multiple levels but it is not in the eye of the public…there are already consultations with other Heads of States, Foreign Ministers and Chief of Defence Staffs as to what can be done if it gets out of hand so there are multiple levels at which intervention is taking place.”

However, he was of the view that: “One of the challenges for Ghana is that the person who ought to call a meeting is himself a party to the crises, so we are thinking about, how do we circumvent the institutional lacuna here and get AU to act because if the AU does not act, then the UN Security Council will have to act because there are three African members on that Council and in New York, there are conversations going on and everybody is watching.”

For him, the most important question is: “How do we ensure that we can use the institutional mechanisms and framework plus the personal networks and relationships that the Heads of States have to ensure that this does not turn into some bloodbath?”

Face à la situation sociopolitique qui prévaut actuellement au Togo, le Ghana, son voisin de l’ouest a décidé de renforcer sa sécurité pour se protéger. Ainsi, le Service d’immigration du Ghana (GIS) a pris des dispositions en en mettant sur pied un « gigantesque » arsenal sécuritaire à sa frontière avec le Togo. 

L’objectif de cette manœuvre est de limiter l’accès du pays aux Togolais qui face à la suite politique actuelle pourrait s’aventurer à se réfugier au Ghana voisin. Pour rappel en 2005, ils étaient nombreux à fuir le Togo pour le Ghana. Une situation qui n’a pas plus aux populations ghanéennes qui parlaient d’une « invasion ».


Le surintendant en chef, Alex Adu, deuxième commandant en charge du Service dans la région de Volta, a déclaré à l’Agence de presse du Ghana que le personnel militaire va désormais faire des patrouilles le long des frontières du nord au Sud chaque heure pour éviter que des personnes en situation irrégulières entrent illégalement dans le pays.


Le surintendant principal Adu a déclaré que le Service suivait de près l’évolution de la situation au Togo et avait élaboré des stratégies pour gérer « toute situation malheureuse ».


Il a déclaré que le renforcement de la sécurité aux frontières n’était pas contre les réfugiés, mais les « fauteurs de troubles » qui représentaient une menace pour la sécurité au Ghana

The coalition of opposition political parties in Togo has declared today, Friday, August 25, 2017, ‘Black Friday’ as it steps up the gear to end the 50-year rule of the Eyadema dynasty.

The opposition had planned to embark on a demonstration today to press home their demand for an amendment of the Constitution to prevent the continued rule of the Eyadema family.

But Joy News’ correspondent Ivy Setordzi, who is monitoring the situation in Lome reports that the demonstration has been called off.

Rather, the people seemed to have hearkened to the call by the opposition to wear black clothing and armbands to work and embark on sit-down down strike.
Images depict empty streets in Lome with virtually no activity on the Togo side of the border with neighbours, Ghana, Ivy reported.

Meanwhile, the government in a release on Thursday, called on the people to ignore the opposition’s call for workers to declare a Black Friday.

Portions of the release translated from French read:

"There are a lot of messages around on social media about "Togo mort" (Black Friday) this 25th August 2017 but government wish to remind all citizens of Togo that there's nothing like black Friday so the 25th August remain an ordinary day, therefore people can go to work and undertake their normal daily activities...".

Background 

The demonstrations organised by the opposition Pan African National Party (PNP) were held simultaneously in Accra, Libreville, New York, and Berlin on Saturday demanding the reinstatement of the 1992 constitution that limits the term limit of the president.

Seven people were reportedly killed and several injured in the northern Togolese town of Sokode.

According to the security minister, about a dozen gendarmes were also injured when the demonstrators overpowered them after they opened fire.

Besides the reinstatement of the constitution, the leader of the PNP party Tikpi Atchadam told the media that they want to immediately end the Gnassingbe dynasty which has ruled 50 years from father to son.

President Faure Gnassingbe who currently chairs the regional body, Economic Community for West African States (ECOWAS), has ruled that country since 2005 after the death of his father, Gnassingbe Eyadema, who had been at the helm for 38 years. 

Travel warning

In a related development, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has cautioned Ghanaians against travelling to Togo on Friday.

According to the GIS, it has picked up intelligence that the opposition in the country is planning a political protest in the capital, Lome to herald the burial of some civilians who lost their lives in last Saturday’s protest against the President and his family.

The Deputy Commissioner of Immigration in the Volta Region, Isaac Owusu Mensah said it will be in the best interest of Ghanaians hoping to travel there to hold on.

“The only issue that has necessitated this is the fact that they are planning a big demonstration so we are just apprising our compatriots to just go about their normal duties and not to get involved in any form of political activity," Mr Owusu Mensah told Citi FM.
